There are still lots of people around who just don’t understand Twitter and what its purpose is. I think only a couple of my friends are on Twitter as they are all loyal to Facebook, but Twitter is a different tool and actually one I am really beginning to like.
Twitter is a micro blogging site and you have a maximum of 140 characters to post out short messages known as Tweets. The two fundamental aspects of Twitter are to build your own community by following people and then for other followers to follow you and your up-dates.
Simple?
For businesses Twitter is another social media channel which helps to connect with current and potential customers, by using the Twitter search function you can find people who may be interested in your organisation, service or product.
Twitter can also be used to promote your company news and the content helps generate and drive traffic to your website. The content can be anything from a blog post, video footage, relevant links or anything that may be of value to the target audience.
For a new product launch or marketing campaign use Twitter to build buzz and let your following know what is happening and when. Users of Twitter regularly network and share information with others within their industries and often ask for feedback on ideas or services, so for businesses there are many benefits to getting involved.
For everyday people you can use Twitter to get the latest news and receive updates on your favourite subjects and people, TV shows and celebrities are widely using Twitter for promotion. You get up-dates throughout the TV show with live coverage and news as it happens. I watched a TV programme a couple of weeks ago and wanted to find out how much tickets were for an event they were promoting, so with my BlackBerry within arm’s reach Twitter was my first port of call and I had the answer within seconds and hadn’t moved off of the sofa!
Twitter is a great way to see what people are doing without having to search out the information, it comes to you and remember if you get fed up with someone tweeting too much or boring you with irrelevant information you have the power to unfollow at anytime!
So do you get Twitter yet?

I think I’m going to give it a go… I really think it might help me find a job, if I do it right! I’ll be following your house rules Scarletta. Thanks, this was very helpful advice, especially to Twitter virgins like me who could easily fall into certain habits and loose why I was using it in the first place.
